This has far more to do with the rapidly imploding Chinese economy and the need to keep the fractious population focused on external enemies as opposed to the rapidly deteriorating Communist party. It should work for a while but not for as long as is necessary. Expect turmoil elsewhere as China starts to enforce it's so called claims to the entire South China and Sea and surrounds. I hope Western politicians do not forget the lessons of past appeasement!
Diaoyu Dao in English simply means "Fishing Island" named after the rich fish resources. Perhaps they should be renamed, "Oil Islands"!

I live in China. Last week, when the CPC pushed the "anger and protest" button, so-called "ordinary" Chinese got frothing-at-the-mouth angry and took to the streets. (The fact that there were lots of pictures in the state-controlled media prove the government either condoned or outright organized these protests.) When The Party noticed that maybe things were getting out of hand it pushed the "OK...we're done being angry" button and, magically, the protests stopped and everyone went back to their lives. A few stores in my city put up "The Islands Belong to China!" signs in a largely cynical effort to appear patriotic and drum up extra business during this holiday week. No one is discussing the Bo Xilai scandal or the upcoming leadership transition. Coincidence? I think not. This is what will happen if the Fish Islands return to China: Some very well connected companies with close ties to The Party will be given the right to "exploit" the area. A very few already fabulously wealthy "Communists" will become even more so. And your average Zhou will see no improvement in his life. The whole charade sickens me. This is all about money and any self-respecting Maoist should see right through it.

Not surprised Japan will deny the islands are disputed. They even dispute the atrocities it committed during WW2. "Comfort Woman? What comfort woman? Invasion of China? No we were just advancing. Nanking? Everyone was happy and lived wonderfully under our administration."

Two bald men fighting over a comb. But one of them is far bigger than the other.
