Syrian Foreign Minister, Jihad al-Makdisi, has responded positively to an Arab League peace deal after it missed the League's last deadline and suffered tight sanctions as a result.
The peace deal put forward by the Arab League aims to stop the bloodshed and violence by the country's president, Bashar al-Assad, and his crackdown on protesters demanding his resignation and major reforms to the nation's laws and justice system.
Syria is under pressure to end its crackdown on an uprising; the UN estimates the crackdown has left more than 4,000 people dead. Over the weekend, the Syrian army staged war games in a show of force. State television said the aim was to test "the capabilities and the readiness of missile systems to respond to any possible aggression".
Part of the Arab League's peace deal requires Syria to accept international observers to keep track of events in Syria more accurately. If Syria fails to sign the deal, the Arab League has said it will further increase sanctions above what it already has done which include a ban on dealing with Syria's central bank, a travel ban on 19 Syrian officials, border closures, and trade sanctions.
